What is online pharmacy?

Since about the year 2000, hundreds of pharmacies have begun operating over the internet.
Many such pharmacies are, in some ways, similar to community pharmacies; the primary difference is the method by which the medications are requested and received. Some customers c... more >>

What does the term "generic" mean? Do generic medications produce the same effect as the brand name medicines do?

The difference between a brand name medicine and a generic one is in the name, shape and in the price. A generic drug is usually called by the name of the active ingredient while a man... more >>

Why are generic medicines so cheap?

Generics are much cheaper than brand-name drugs because generic companies do not have overhead cost such as research and marketing. Most generic drugs are manufactured off-shore and sold online. Since manufacturers do not spend on advertising, research, and crea... more >>

Carisoprodol

Generic name: Carisoprodol
Brand names: Soma

Why Carisoprodol is prescribed

Soma is used, along with rest, physical therapy, and other measures, for the relief of acute, painful muscle strains and spasms.

The most important facts about Carisoprodol

Soma alone will not heal your muscles. You need to follow the program of physical therapy, rest, or exercise that your doctor prescribes. Do not attempt any more physical activity than your doctor recommends, even though Soma temporarily makes it seem feasible.

How you should take Carisoprodol

Take Soma exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

If you miss a dose

If you have forgotten to take a dose, take it as soon as you recall.if only an hour or so has passed. If you do not remember until later, skip the missed one and get back to your regular schedule. Do not take two doses right away.

Storage instructions

Store Carisoprodol at room temperature in a tightly closed container.

Side effects may be caused by Carisoprodol

A drug cannot anticipate producing side effects. If any develop or change in intensity, let your doctor know as soon as possible. Your doctor only can determine whether it is safe for you to continue taking Soma.

  • More common possible effects include:
Agitation, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, facial flushing, fainting, headache, hiccups, inability to fall or stay asleep, irritability, light-headedness upon standing up, loss of coordination, nausea, rapid heart rate, stomach upset, tremors, vertigo, vomiting

Allergic reactions usually seen between the first and fourth doses of Soma in patients who have never taken Carisoprodol before include: itching, red welts on the skin, and skin rash. A more severe allergic reaction may include symptoms such as asthmatic attacks, dizziness, fever, low blood pressure, shock, stinging of the eyes, swelling due to fluid retention, and weakness.

When Carisoprodol should not be prescribed

If you are either sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to Soma or drugs of this type, such as meprobamate (Miltown), you should not take Carisoprodol. Make sure your doctor is aware of any drug reactions you have experienced.

Unless you are directed to do so by your doctor, do not take Carisoprodol if you have porphyria (an inherited blood disorder).

Special warnings about Carisoprodol

In rare cases, the first dose of Soma may cause unusual symptoms that appear within minutes or hours of taking the medication. Symptoms reported include: agitation, confusion, disorientation, dizziness, double vision, enlargement of pupils, extreme weakness, exaggerated feeling of well-being, lack of coordination, speech problems, temporary loss of vision, and temporary paralysis of arms and legs. These symptoms usually subside within a few hours. If you experience any of them, contact your doctor immediately.

Soma may impair the mental or physical abilities you need to drive a car or operate dangerous machinery. Do not participate in hazardous activities until you know how Carisoprodol affects you.

If you have a history of drug dependence, make sure your doctor is aware of it before you start taking Carisoprodol.

Withdrawal symptoms, including abdominal cramps, chilliness, headache, insomnia, and nausea, have occurred in people who suddenly stop taking Soma.

Take Carisoprodol cautiously if you have any kidney or liver problems.

Food and drugs that may interact with Carisoprodol

Soma may intensify the effects of alcohol. Be careful drinking alcoholic beverages while you are taking Carisoprodol.

If you take Soma with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is extremely important to check with your doctor before combining Soma with any of the following:

Antibiotics prevent UTIs better than probiotics

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Antibiotics are still better than probiotics at preventing urinary tract infections, but at least "good bacteria" don't add to a person's antibiotic resistance, a new study concludes. Recurring UTIs are common among some women and low-dose antibiotics are sometimes used to prevent them. The worry is that overuse of the drugs also reduces their effectiveness by making disease-causing bacteria like E. coli resistant. ..... more >>

All baby boomers should get hepatitis C test -CDC

(Reuters) - All baby boomers should be tested at least once for the liver-destroying hepatitis C virus, according to proposed guidelines from U.S. health officials released on Friday. The often-undiagnosed virus is transmitted through contaminated blood. While infection rates have dropped dramatically since the early 1990s - due in part to the introduction of blood and organ screening - many older adults are still at risk, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which released the draft guidelines. ..... more >>

Fish oil shows little effect on Tourette's tics

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Some parents swear by fish oil as a treatment for the "tics" caused by Tourette's disorder, but so far the research evidence is slim. In a small study of children with Tourette's, researchers found that omega-3 fatty acids were no better than a placebo at reducing the severity of tics -- the sudden, involuntary movements or vocalizations that mark Tourette's. On the other hand, children who took omega-3 did show an improvement in the degree to which their tics bothered them, researchers report in the journal Pediatrics. ..... more >>
